“We use the criteria you taught us to try to code the patients. It’s a tool that’s quick to learn and quick to use to identify patients and we found it very easy to be honest."

Overview of Phase 1 Gold Care Pilot
Three hospitals in Kenya and Uganda have been accepted as part of the first pilot programme of Gold Care in Africa. Applications were invited to be part of a pilot project in 3 hospitals in Africa, from September 25 - August 26. The work is supported by the Andrew Rodger Trust in the UK, in association with APCA, the African Palliative Care Association, including sharing of learning, experience and some resources, videos, tools, evaluations used in the UK’s GSF Hospitals programme, plus expertise, support and mentoring from those experienced in GSF in the UK.

A small seed-fund grant of $5,000 is available to each hospital, half at the beginning and on completion of the pilot, administered via APCA, to support staff time, provide additional resources. All training, support and resources will be free to participants. It is important to confirm support from your senior hospital clinical team, any palliative care support you have and official authorisation by your hospital or Government sponsor.

A follow up evaluation and publication is planned, to include local innovations with further adaptation and potential roll out to other areas in future building on learning from the pilot.
